Informed consent is a conversation, not just a signature. These are the questions worth asking the study team before you decide.
Joining a clinical trial is an important decision. Before you sign the informed consent form, the study team should answer all your questions clearly and patiently. Here are some questions you may want to ask.
About the study
- What is the purpose of this study?
- Why do you think I may be eligible?
- How long will the study last, and how many visits are involved?
About risks and benefits
- What are the possible side effects?
- What other treatment options do I have?
- What happens if I am harmed during the study?
About practical matters
- Will I need to pay for anything? Will my travel costs be reimbursed?
- Can I continue seeing my own doctor?
- Who can I contact with questions at any time?
About your rights
- Can I leave the study at any time?
- How will my personal information be protected?
- Will I be told about the results?
Take the consent document home, discuss it with your family and your doctor, and only sign when you feel ready. Participation is always voluntary.
